SUMMARY

San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD), established in 1963 as the Stockton Metropolitan Transit District, officially marked its 50th year of service on June 1, 2015.

RTD celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a free community event at Stockton’s Banner Island Ballpark on June 6, 2015. RTD entertained roughly 1,500 guests with live music, a historical exhibit, family-friendly activities, and a fireworks show. Families enjoyed a children’s area with clowns, inflatables, carnival games, and face painting. Speakers at the event included Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman, Gary Prost representing Congressman Jerry McNerney, Stockton Mayor Anthony Silva, and RTD Board Chair Gary S. Giovanetti.

At the event, RTD premiered a fully-wrapped gold bus showcasing RTD’s history, innovations, and RTD’s 50th Anniversary logo. RTD also displayed the various types of buses in its fleet. The event featured a historical photo exhibit with information about San Joaquin County’s first 50 years of public transportation through RTD. RTD also premiered its 50th Anniversary Commemorative Photo Book, which will be distributed to local agencies, elected officials, and libraries.

The four-hour event included performances by local musical groups including the Mike Torres Band, Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players, the Souls of the Rising Sun, the Valley Community Orchestra and Stockton Singers. Following a performance by a Polynesian fire dancer, the event concluded with a dazzling display of fireworks.

Through the generosity of its 26 event sponsors, RTD was able to offer this event free to the community. Instead of charging for admission, RTD encouraged event guests to bring school supply donations for the benefit of Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School. As another way of thanking its customers for its support, RTD offered free bus rides on the day of the event.

RTD’s 50th Anniversary was celebrated in a grand way as it is a testament to the important and long-running role that RTD plays in the community it serves. RTD appreciates its partners for generously sponsoring the year-long activities leading up to 50th Anniversary Celebration, the community for participating in the celebration, and the many RTD employees who helped make this celebration a success. Through this celebration, RTD employees demonstrated its team spirit, camaraderie, cheerfulness, commitment to the community, and a strong sense of pride for RTD’s achievements.
