Fare Machines Are Retiring – Here’s What You Need to Know

Starting September 2025, RTD will begin removing fare vending machines found across select bus stops. This change is part of our plan to modernize how you pay for your ride and make transit simpler, faster, and more convenient.

Why We’re Making This Change

The old machines are outdated and expensive to maintain. By retiring them now, RTD can focus on better technology that makes paying for your trip easier—like contactless tap-and-ride, faster boarding, and more flexible payment options coming in the near future.

How to Pay During the Transition

While fare machines are being removed, here’s how you can pay for your trip:

  • Credit/Debit Card Users: Buy digital tickets through the Vamos Mobility App.

  • Cash Users: Pay exact fare directly on board. (Please note: fareboxes do not give change.)

What’s Next

In a future phase, RTD will introduce a new generation of fare vending machines at transfer stations and rider-friendly upgrades, including contactless options and other features designed to make paying quicker and more convenient.
